Tagged is definitely a spam site

June 13, 2007 | Filed Under Social Networks

I agree with Dave Taylor; Tagged is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s a total con. I was a “victim” of this site just recently. I got an invitation from a friend of mine so I went to the site to sign up and add myself as their friend. So the site asked me if I wanted to check and see what other friends of mine were already on Tagged. I figured sure why not. So I let it go through my Gmail address book and “check” to see how many people I knew were already on Tagged. Then is said 15 people I knew were already on Tagged and did I want to add them as friends… I figured sure, Why not?

Well what followed was complete horror. I started getting emails from people I haven’t spoken to in a long time asking me why I want them to join me on Tagged. It turns out Tagged spams everyone in your address book. No wonder this site is doing so “well”.

Techcrunch wrote about how Tagged is one of the fastest growing social networks and how they’re now profitable. I think it’s a crime that a site can hide behind completely cheap and unprofessional tactics and be getting recognition.

What I have a hard time understanding is how the folks at Tagged can sit in a room and talk about the product and knowingly come up with all these ridiculous ways of sucking people into their social network. Apparently their CEO Greg Tseng is known as the King of “viral growth”…. Yeah. I have nothing against the people here but c’mon guys, this site is just spamming everyone.

Anyway, here’s some new data on the site. Stats from Comscore and Alexa are pretty consistent. Comscore data isn’t available for June yet but when it is, I hope it tells the same story Alexa does.

I have no idea how I ever got signed in, don’t even know my log in password. I still get to my profile through some ‘you have been tagged’- automatic log-in message.

    after 1 year I have only 4 , but, very nice/good friends.
And….ofcourse I don’t add strange friends-requests, and I see the filthy horny grey-men haunting for young and easy chicks also.
I see and know; it sucks.
    still…….

    it works for me!
    never had any spam!
    I’m so secure..! haha

Tagged should be out-of-business for unethical practices.
It’s a scam and it should be investigated by the authorities.
INVESTORS: I would not buy this stock even if it was worth one penny.

We share the Email addresses with Microsoft and they share their eMail addresswith us!!!!!”

MY FIANCEE IS POSTING THIS TO EVERY SITE, FORUM, COMPLAINT SITES, ETC. AND WE MUST HELP STOP TAGGED FROM WASTING SO MANY PEOPLES TIME. SEARCH IT IN ALL THE SEARCH ENGINES AND YOU WILL SEE TAGGED IS BEING BLOCKED IN PLACES AS THEY STEAL YOUR FRIENDS AND INFORMATION. HERE IT IS:

TAGGED.COM SUCKS! THEY DELETED MY PROFILE. ALL THE MESSAGES AND COMMENTS FROM MY FIANCEE AS WELL AS ALL THE COMMENTS I SEARCHED MANY HOURS FOR… ALL OF IT… GONE!. 2500 plus friends. all comments, pics, pic comments, journal, messages … everything! GONE!
TAGGED DID THIS TWICE!! TAGGED CANNOT BE TRUSTED! GET OUT AND GO TO A REAL SITE BEFORE IT HAPPENS TO YOU… YES I LIKED TAGGED. BUT WHEN U LOSE ALL YOUR STUFF… ESPECIALLY THE NEXT TIME …YOU WILL HATE TAGGED FOR WASTING YOUR TIME. IF YOU CREATE ANOTHER SITE THEN THEY PUT A BLOCK ON YOUR COMPUTER SO YOU HAVE TO ENTER CAPTCHA TO DO ANYTHING.. and yes I was an active member and had a few decent friends. The other 90% were mostly scammers and fakes. All of my decent friends are leaving there because as others have said in many places, it’s nothing but lowlifes anyway so why even bother with a failing scammer site.

WIKIPEDIA SAYS THE FOLLOWING ABOUT TAGGED.COM:
A TIME magazine article called Tagged “The World’s Most Annoying Website”.[22] Tagged asks users for their email username and password, checks their email address books for contacts and repeatedly sends email invitations to people who are not yet on Tagged, stating that they have been “added as a friend” or that the inviter had sent them photos on Tagged. This process has drawn criticism in the technology press[23][24] and from users.[25] These emails were discussed as possible spam by Black Web 2.0.[26] The resemblance to a virus has often been mentioned, including by urban legend site Snopes.com.[27] The New York Times referred to the practice as “contact scraping” [28]

In July 2009 New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced his intention to sue Tagged.com for “deceptive email marketing and invasion of privacy” [29] According to the press release, Tagged.com engaged in “deceptive Email Promotions, Identity Theft, and Invasion of Privacy ”

Prior to co-founding Tagged, Greg Tseng was co-founder and CEO of internet incubator Jumpstart Technologies.[30] In March 2006, Jumpstart Technologies settled with the Federal Trade Commission on alleged violations of the CAN-SPAM Act, which included a $900,000 fine but no admission of guilt.[31]

From February 2009, Tagged.com has been blocked in Qatar by the only ISP, Qtel, after a number of complaints from the public.[32] Tagged.com had been one of the 10 most visited sites in Qatar.[33]
